The Only CarryOn Packing List You Need for Long Trips
A minimalist system that has survived a decade of assignments across four continents.

I have packed for a three-week assignment and a three-month one out of the same 40-litre bag. The trick is not clever gear — it's committing to a repeating outfit system and treating everything else as a laundry problem. This is the exact list.
The bag itself
A 35–45 litre carry-on with a proper hip belt and a clamshell opening. Peak Design's 45L Travel Bag, Tortuga's 40L, and Osprey's Farpoint 40 are the three we've tested for years. Add a packable daypack (Matador, Sea to Summit) that squashes into a fist for day trips.
Clothing: a ten-item capsule
Two merino T-shirts (Icebreaker or Woolly), one merino long-sleeve, one button-down (linen or lightweight cotton), one packable puffy (Uniqlo Ultra Light is the cheat code), one rain shell, two pairs of technical trousers (Bluffworks or Outlier), one pair of shorts, one pair of shoes you can walk 15 km in (On Cloudmonster or Allbirds Tree Runners), and one packable pair of sandals or slip-ons. Five pairs of merino socks, four pairs of merino underwear. Wash every 3–4 days in a sink.
Toiletries under 100 ml
Everything in a single quart-sized bag, all under 100 ml. Solid shampoo and conditioner bars (Ethique, Lush) skip the liquid limit entirely. A single tube of retinol, one SPF 50 stick, one tinted lip balm. Buy toothpaste on arrival — it's smaller and always available.
Tech, documents, and the personal item
Laptop, phone, one charging brick with the right adapters, over-ear noise-cancelling headphones (Bose QC or Sony XM), a Kindle. Copies of passport, insurance certificate, and vaccination card on your phone and in a cloud folder. A slim wallet with one credit card, one debit card, and $200 in USD for emergencies. Nothing else earns its weight.
